Homosexuality is not a western import but homophobia is.

A popular Ethiopian daily newspaper alleges the United States and Europe are plotting to export, spread and promote homosexuality in Ethiopia.

In an article published by Yenga daily, on the 18 June, homosexuality was described as rapidly-growing ‘infestation’ whose carriers are now ‘estimated’ to have reached 16,000.

The paper also alleged that gays have an average of 75 sexual partners a year, and their ‘promiscuous’ nature propels some to have seven to nine sexual partners a day.

The article described how such ‘practices’ are being ‘exported’ into Ethiopia through students who receive scholarships to study in the United States and Europe. It further suggested that the millions of dollars spent on scholarships are really designed to spread the ‘culture’ of homosexuality whose ‘agents’ (i.e. graduate students) ‘recruit’ street children of 8-16 years of age.

Other agents conspiring to ‘spread’ homosexuality are apparently the United Nations, Embassies of European and North American countries, International NGO’s with their gay staff and tourists.

The paper reported that the national anti-homosexual conference that was held little over a week ago in Ethiopia’s capital, Addis Ababa, demanded urgent measures be taken by the government, including the death penalty, in order to prevent the rapid ‘spread’ of homosexuality and the apparent consequential sexual abuse of young boys.

The article additionally demanded that the Ethiopian government block all pornographic sites because these factor in the spread of the ‘social evil’ identified by the conference.

Ethiopian LGBT activists have reported increasing levels of homophobia since the anti-homosexuality conference, including receiving death threats. The conference included the main religious leaders of Ethiopia, government officials, members of the Ethiopian Parliament, leaders of political parties, youth organizations and representatives from other civil societies called upon the Ethiopian government to take measures and resist international bodies in their attempt to ‘subvert’ Ethiopian traditions by ‘infesting’ the country with homosexuality.

An Ethiopian LGBT activist based in Addis Ababa who spoke anonymously said: ‘I am an activist working to address the health and social problems of LGBT people in Ethiopia. I’ve got no idea from where and how the article got such “statistics”.

‘I strongly disagree with this campaign which is a part of the local religious leaders in collaboration with homophobic religious organizations’ that we know are actually based in Sweden, United Kingdom and others countries… They want to incite the government and the society at large to further stigmatize, persecute and attack the LGBT community in Ethiopia.’

Ethiopia leaders calls for ‘severe’ penalties against gays at hate meet

And I say it again, homosexuality is not a western import, homophobia is. As is fundamentalist christianity.

Ethiopian goverment official uses conference to say country ‘will be the graveyard of homosexuality,’ while religious leaders call for severe punishment to fight this ‘western disease’
Patriarch Abuna Paulos said homosexuality was 'subverting' Ethiopian culture.

Ethiopian government officials, religious leaders and civil representatives have declared their opposition to LGBT rights and condemned homosexuality as a western epidemic.

A national conference entitled ‘Homosexuality and its associated social disastrous consequences’ on Saturday (9 June) was held in the newly built African Union headquarters, in Ethiopia’s capital, Addis Ababa.

The conference was organised by Dr Seyoum Antonius, president of United for Life, a non-governmental organization which describes itself as Christian, pro-life and backing the sanctity of marriage.

Over 2,000 participants attended the conference, including the main religious leaders of Ethiopia, government officials, members of the Ethiopian Parliament, leaders of political parties, youth organizations and representatives from other civil societies.

During the conference an Ethiopian government spokesman, who GSN has not been able to identify, stated: ‘Recently, the US President Barak Obama, British Prime Minster David Cameron and other western leaders are trying to establish ties between aid and the rights of homosexuals, but this will never happen in Ethiopia.

‘We don’t want their aid as long as it is related to homosexuality, I assure you that Ethiopia has no room for homosexuality and our country will be the graveyard of homosexuality.’

Abune Paulos, the Patriarch of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church said: ‘Ethiopians do not need their identity to be dictated for them from outside no matter how wealthy or powerful the forces applying the pressure were.’

He also read a statement of an interfaith grouping of Ethiopia’s religious leaders condemning homosexuality as an unnatural and calling on international bodies to stop attempting to ‘subvert’ Ethiopian traditions.

The statement called upon the Ethiopian government to punish ‘those who are found infested with sodomite activities’ and called for raising awareness how to protect society from this ‘infestation’.

Dr Seyoum Antonius presented findings of his ‘study’ that ‘proved’ that homosexuality is a result of inappropriate upbringing and leads to STDs, HIV and ‘severe psychological disorders’.

This directly contradicts the view of professional medical and psychological bodies around the world, including the World Health Organization.

The conference also heard a ‘witness’ account of a young Ethiopian man who was forcefully raped at the age of six and consequently ‘infected with the homosexual disease for 20 years’ and is also living with AIDS. The man claimed that he has been ‘cured from homosexuality’ and is now a ‘changed man’.

Activist ‘Selam’ from EthioLGBT.com, a support site for LGBT Ethiopians told Gay Star News: ‘Tollowing this conference, the atmosphere is becoming more hostile and tough to the LGBT community in Ethiopia.’

Selam’s name has been changed by GSN to protect his identity.

Under Ethiopian law, homosexual activity is punishable by up to five years imprisonment.

Mr Gay World Ethiopia forced to flee
Fears for safety of Mr Gay World’s black African contestants, as Zimbabwean pulls out and Ethiopia’s entry flees country
Mr Gay World Ethiopa forced to flee country after death threats

The Mr Gay World contestant from Ethiopia is now a refugee after receiving death threats.

The global male beauty pageant, which is this year held in Johannesburg, from 4 to 8 April, was last week celebrating after getting its first black African finalists.

However, the competition was shaken at the weekend when Zimbabwe’s Taurai Zhanje pulled out due to ‘some very serious considerations’, which Mr Gay World’s Africa director, Coenie Kukkuk, hints are linked to the country’s political situation in the run up to a general election.

Now Mr Gay Ethiopia, Robel Gizaw Hailu, has been forced to flee his home, fearing his life, and does not intend to return to his native country in the foreseeable future, Kukkuk revealed to Gay Star News.

Despite currently in hiding, Hailu is still competing in the contest, along with other black African finalists Wendelinus Hamutenya from Namibia and Lance Weyer from South Africa.

Hamutenya was the first ever Mr Gay Namibia, but in December last year he was attacked with a glass bottle after being followed by two men while on his way home.

Kukkuk told GSN he is sad about recent developments, but says unfortunately the persecution of LGBT people in Africa is still the norm.

‘The Zimbabwean delegate had to withdraw, the Namibian delegate was assaulted and the Ethiopian one is getting death threats,’ he said.

‘I do not think LGBTI people in the West really have an idea what black LGBTI Africans have to deal with on a daily basis. That is why most of them still are, and will remain, closeted.’

South Africa has won the Mr Gay World title twice, in 2010 and 2011.

However, Kukkuk says despite South Africa boasting one of the most liberal constitutions in the world, the country’s political will is still not strong enough to really assist black LGBT citizens.

He said: ‘In the big cities in South Africa and in the predominantly upmarket or predominantly white areas, it is tolerated and even accepted, but sadly in the black rural areas it is still a taboo. One that you can pay for with your life.’

Kukkuk added there might be a candidate from Ghana to take Zimbabwe’s place, but they are not sure yet.

Homosexuality is illegal in 38 African countries, with Mauritania, Sudan, and northern Nigeria allowing for the death penalty.

Zimbabwe’s President Robert Mugabe celebrated his 88th birthday on Saturday with a tirade of homophobic abuse.

A new constitution is currently being drafted in the run-up to elections and he called for voters to reject gay rights in the charter.

Mugabe, who has ranted about homosexuality for years, has previously branded gays ‘worse than dogs’.
